Amy Halden and the Locked Archive Door

A locked archive door stands between Amy and an answer. That has never been enough to stop her.

AMY

By the time I find the locked door, I have already spent three hours proving that something on the other side should not exist.

The discrepancy begins innocently enough: a citation in an old volume on preserved memory. The newer edition still references the same research, but the paragraph explaining it has vanished. According to the catalogue, so has the paper itself.

According to the transfer register, it was moved twenty-one years ago.

There is no record of where.

The archivist watches me trace the missing entry with one finger. “Some records are restricted, Miss Halden.”

“So I’ve discovered.”

His gaze travels toward the black-oak door at the end of the corridor. It is a tiny mistake. Most people probably would not notice it.

I do.

The brass plaque reads AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

“I only need the original index.”

“No.”

There are refusals that end conversations. This one merely gives me something more specific to research.

Eleven minutes later, I return with the archive regulations open to a clause concerning unresolved transfers from public collections. The archivist reads it twice, then looks at me as though I personally wrote the law to inconvenience him.

The door opens.

I am kept at the threshold while he searches an older index. Eventually his hand stops.

The card he removes is edged in red.

POST-PRESERVATION VARIANCE.

Beneath it, stamped hard enough to scar the paper:

DISCREDITED. RESTRICTED.

I look from the card to the modern volume still tucked beneath my arm.

“They still cite it.”

The archivist does not answer.

Outside, rain has begun silvering the streets of Veyrhold. I stand beneath the archive steps and write one sentence in my notebook before the ink can run.

They buried the argument.

Then, beneath it:

Why did they keep the conclusion?

That is usually how trouble begins.

Amy Halden has never liked following an order.
